Calling attention to the alarming rate of breast cancer in Pakistan, was on top of Hashoo Group’s corporate social responsibility campaigns with Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital and Cancer Research Center this October. One in nine women in Pakistan gets breast cancer, with thousands of reported deaths, which could have been prevented with early detection. The group that owns the Pearl-Continental and Marriott Hotels across nine different cities in Pakistan, from Muzaffarabad to Karachi joined the Cancer Hospital’s Pink Butterfly campaign involving both employees as well as the thousands of guests during the entire month of October. This was the second year the awareness campaign educating on early detection saving lives was taken up by Hashoo Group. More engagement and interaction was seen this year compared to last, which itself proves such campaigns are breaking the cultural taboo which is one of the factors leading to the high death rate.
Guests were provided brochures and pamphlets with information on early detection of breast cancer in unique ways. Making use of the laundry service, the information material was returned with every piece of women’s clothing. The hotel facades were also lit up in pink, and an eye-catching pink hi-tea was another way the information was shared. On the employees side, Hashoo Group employs more than 5,000 across its nine hotels. Awareness sessions on early detection of the cancer were conducted by qualified doctors from Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital and Cancer Research Center across five hotels for more than 300 women associates. With the Pearl-Continental Hotel Karachi offering its women associates above the age of forty free of cost mammograms. Social media played a big role with an online ‘Catch the Butterfly’ contest inviting winners for a ‘Pink Butterfly’ Hi-tea with their friends.
